“I really believe that, left on his own, the boy would be dead by now…I think in my own way I saved Jason’s life.”
“Bull! How about the truth for a change, Bruce?”
“Okay, I admit it. I recruited Jason because Batman needs a Robin. Fighting crime in Gotham city is not a one-man job. I couldn’t do the job alone.”
“I said I wanted the truth, Bruce.”
“How dare you talk to me like that…”
“The Truth…”
“ALL RIGHT! I admit it. I was lonely. I missed you.”

Part III
As Bruce admits in these panels, he took in Jason because he was lonely and missed having Dick around. As he got older and wiser, Bruce started to repair that broken bridge between him and Dick and [as see here] admits they became at odds because that’s is often the way between fathers and sons.
I like the fact it took a long time for Bruce and Dick’s relationship to heal, (in fact right through the eighties and into the mid-nineties.) Bruce never wanted to see his guardianship of Dick as a father and son relationship, but inevitably it became that way.
[Batman #416]
Part II
Here we see Dick packing up and leaving for college after Bruce has fired him. Poor Alfred forces Dick to take some money to live on and stands alone as his charge leaves. Dick leaves college after one year and drifts around until he hooks back up with the Teen Titans, before they disband again. We know Bruce allows Dick to keep his identity as Robin despite no longer being partners, and when Dick is almost nineteen the New Teen Titans are formed with him in the leader position. For some reason never really fully explained, Dick gives up being Robin. Most speculate that Bruce decided that Dick as Robin should be retired permanently and Dick quietly let his former partner have his way.
Not long after creating the persona of Nightwing, Dick is shocked to see Batman and Robin in the paper and leaves for Gotham.
Dick then forces Bruce to acknowledge him not as Batman, but as Bruce.
(Side note, Dick’s awesome suit and checkered shirt when he leaves for college and his disappointed facial expressions when talking to Bruce make this 80s issue so awesome retro.)
Part III looking at why Bruce really took in Jason will be up momentarily.

[Part 1]
Bruce and Dick have a heart-to—well a deep and—okay, Dick has a meaningful conversation mostly with himself while Bruce glowers and acts like a kicked dog. (Typical of late-eighties Bats, but I digress.)
We also find out why Dick was fired and discover that Bruce also has no tact even when attempting to be overprotective…plus he made Dick cry…again.
Part 2 will be up in a moment.
“You should be proud your little cousin made Seeker first year, Jay”
Jason hides his surprise at Dick’s anouncement easily and turns to Tim, “Don’t tell me I’ve scared you off the pitch permanently, Drake?”
Before the other boy can reply, Damian supplies an answer for him:
“As if they’d allow Drake back on the team, anyway.”
And here’s the last batch from the livestream. I want to thank everybody who dropped by to keep me company!
